Japanese rider, Takahisa Fujinami (Repsol Montesa HRC) today took victory in the second round of the 2006 World trials championship in Mortagua, Portugal. With Fujinami still suffering from an injury to his left hand sustained at the World indoor trials championship in Buenos Aires in March, this was a surprise victory for him, having had to settle for sixth place at last weekends opening round in Spain.
Fujinami turned in an amazing opening lap score, dropping just two penalties for the lap. In second place at the half way stage was rignin worl Champion Adam Raga (gasgas) three points behind Fujinami with Albert Cabestany (Sherco) in third place on seven marks.
With a slim lead over Raga going into the second lap, Fujinami could not afford to relax and continued his consistent ride, dropping five marks for the lap to finish the event on seven in total. Whilst Raga performed better over the second lap, it was not by enough to overtake Fujinami.
Cabestany had a disastrous second lap, dropping twenty two marks – more than three times his first lap score. At this level of competition those kind of mistakes will not go unpunished and, despite not having a good first lap, Dougie Lampkin (Repsol-Montesa HRC), dropped just six marks in the second tour to climb up the standings and take the remaining podium position.
Having achieved second place in both rounds held so far, Adam Raga leads the championship standings. Winner of the opening round, Toni Bou (Beta) finished today in fourth place and is one point behind Raga in the championship. Lampkin is tied in third place overall with Fujinami.
In the Junior championship, Michael Brown (Beta) made it two wins out of two rounds, beating Daniel Oliveras (Gas Gas) by three marks.
